Key lessons
My key lessons that have been more fully developed are lesson 2, lesson 4 and lesson 6
Lesson 1: Shakespeare Overview
The class is introduced to the class weebly, the weebly is simply called Romeo and Juliet, as they walk into the room. It is explained that it is THEIR website. It is used to store their group ideas and thoughts that will be gained throughout the topic.
Prior knowledge will be gained in this lesson by students using think pair share to garner what they already know about Romeo and Juliet. The class will then collaborate and all prior knowledge will be placed into a class KWL that is located on the class weebly.
Students will also discuss in this lesson:
· The basic plot of the original play
· The names of characters that are in the play
· The setting in which they play is set
Students will be introduced to blogger, an online journal. in this journal the students will be able to express their thoughts and ideas on the unit whilst making notes about their final piece of assesment. Any ideas or problems the students are having can be described on their personal blog and then answered by the teacher in comments or in the classroom. The LM will have all the blog addresses in a page on the class website as a way of monitoring the students individual process on the task.
A mock blog is available. Mock Blog

Lesson 2: Soap opera: What does this mean?
Students will be shown tonight’s TV guide on the smart board as they walk into the room. The class will then be asked thought provoking questions such as, which shows out of this line up do you consider a soap opera? What elements of this show represent a soap opera?
Students are asked to group up in 3’s or 4’s groups are asked to collaborate on their prior knowledge on soap operas. Students are asked to create their own definitions of a soap opera. These definitions will be shared in the class and a single class definition will be created and placed onto the wiki along with a dictionary definition that will previously be placed onto the class weebly. The class is then shown a sneak peek of the next night’s episode of home and away. Students are asked to think about the elements that they think makes home and away stand out as a soap opera? Number of characters? Ongoing drama? Constant emotion? What elements of Romeo and Juliet could be retold in the perspective of a modern day soap opera? Teacher engages thinking by structuring questions. The love triangle between Romeo? Rosalind and Juliet. The love triangle between Juliet, Romeo and Paris. The friendship between the priest and Romeo. Romeo and Juliet’s relationship itself?
Students are given 5 - 10 minutes to use google as a search engine. they are asked to type in soap opera and to make notes on what they find.
Individual students are asked to list scenes from Romeo and Juliet that could fit into a scene from a soap opera. Students will be given a sample scene in which to add drama and turn into a scene from a soap opera. “Act 2 scene 4: Juliet’s Nurse has just informed Juliet that Romeo is waiting at Friar Lawrence’s cell to marry her.” Students are given time at the end of the lesson to create a personal blog and reflect on their ideas that came about in today’s lesson.

Lesson 3: Shakespeare the play
In this lesson the students will be asked to read through the play. Students will have the choice of being a different character in each scene so that every student has the opportunity to read. The play will also be displayed onto the smart board so that students can also follow along with the reading on the board. Students will have to pair up and share a text between them.
At the end of the lesson students will be asked to think about which characters appeal to them. A general discussion can take place about the events that occur during the play the words that students may not understand and any general question about the play that the students may have. Students will be given 5 minutes to put any thoughts up onto their own personal blog.

Lesson 4: Romeo and Juliet Characterization
5 minutes of the Baz Luhrmanns interpretation of Romeo and Juliet on DVD will be played to the students as a hook into the lesson. General discussion on the clip will take place. Some motivating questions could be “who was the introduction about?” “What is happening in the clip?” “What era of time do you think this clip is set in?”
Students will use think pair share to explore their prior knowledge on Romeo and Juliet. Who do you think are the main characters involved in the story? What do you know about the plot? a bubble chart on the board of their prior knowledge on the topic of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet the play is handed throughout the class by the LM one between two students.
Tasks to be completed before the end of the lesson are written on the board by the LM: Students are to complete a character profile on a chosen character in the play.
Tasks to be completed for assessment: Students will be asked to create a scene in which they transform the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare into a modern day soap opera
The home and away website is then displayed on the smart board as an introduction into discussing a soap opera. What they think they know about home and away? What genre is the TV show? What are some of the plot lines that have happened recently?
A clip from home and away of Leah and Vinnie’s wedding and then the fire in which he dies is then shown to the students. In Romeo and Juliet doesn’t tragedy strike as happiness ensues? Which plot lines of home and away does this remind you of? Couldn’t Romeo and Juliet be considered a Soap Opera as well?
LM goes to the link http://au.tv.yahoo.com/home-and-away/cast/characters/ to view the shows character guides. Students are asked then to choose one of the characters from Romeo and Juliet and asked to write a character profile in the same format as they see on the home and away website. LM asks the class to divide a page in their books into 3 columns. These columns are to have the heading what I know? What I would like to know? What I have learnt?
Each student is asked to reflect using their online blog about what they think is a soap opera? What elements of a Soap opera appeals to them? What could they change in the play to make it more modern?
